lecture by archaeologist Jiří Zubalík

Archaeologist Jiří Zubalík will present the results of the archaeological research carried out in the spring of 2026 at the site of the former Great Synagogue, located at the corner of today’s Přízova and Spálená Streets in Brno. The research focused on the state of preservation of the synagogue’s remains, which were destroyed by Nazi forces in March 1939, and on the analysis of the destruction layers associated with its demise. The research also included the documentation of the foundation walls and an examination of the building’s architectural development, including various construction details. The lecture will offer a unique insight into the physical remains of one of the most significant buildings of Jewish Brno and demonstrate how archaeology can contribute to preserving the memory of vanished places.

The lecture will be held in Czech with English interpretation.
