The Spirituality of the Jerusalem Temple and the Spirituality of the Synagogue

Festival

CZK 50

lecture by Leo Pavlát

Through an illustrated lecture accompanied by a PowerPoint presentation, Leo Pavlát will demonstrate how, in Jewish religious tradition, the synagogue represents a deliberate continuation of the structure, symbolism, and spiritual logic of the Temple in Jerusalem. The lecture explores how the Temple's sacred functions were transformed—from space into time, from sacrifice into text, and from priestly service into the shared worship of the entire community.

The first part will focus on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the structure of the Temple, its furnishings, the meaning of sacrificial worship, and the roles of the priests and the High Priest. The second part will explain how the synagogue reflects the legacy of the Temple through the Torah Ark, the Torah scroll, and the bimah, the platform from which the Torah is read, including the symbolism of the Torah's ceremonial adornments in relation to the vestments of the High Priest. The lecture concludes with Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement—showing how the synagogue liturgy most directly recalls the ancient Temple service.

The presentation features around fifty historical illustrations, examples of synagogue decoration, unique ritual objects, works of art, and documentary photographs that enrich the discussion.
