Musical Evenings at the Herdans’: Jacques Offenbach – The Genius of Operetta and the Prophet of the Musical

Jacques Offenbach is widely regarded as the father of operetta and one of the pioneers of the modern musical. Less well known is the fact that this extraordinary composer came from a Jewish family, and that his life reflects the changing position of Jewish artists in 19th-century Europe.

The inaugural event of the new Musical Evenings at the Herdans’ series will be led by musicologist, composer, and writer Miloš Štědroň. Held once a month, the series will introduce both well-known and lesser-known Jewish composers through listening sessions accompanied by a glass of kosher wine in the unique setting of the sensitively restored Herdan family apartment.
