guided architectural heritage walk led by Zuzana Ragulová
Architectural education in interwar Brno was of an exceptionally high standard. The German Technical University attracted Jewish students not only from the Czech lands and Slovakia, but also from Hungary. At the same time, Brno was home to many prosperous Jewish industrialists who often commissioned Jewish architects to design their homes, factories, and commercial buildings. As a result, many of these architects chose to remain in the city after completing their studies.
The walk, led by architectural historian Zuzana Ragulová, follows in the footsteps of both renowned figures, such as Ernst Wiesner and Otto Eisler, and lesser-known architects like Zoltán Egri. Participants will discover surviving buildings, lost architectural landmarks, and historic shopfronts that together tell the story of the remarkable contribution Jewish architects made to the development of modern Brno.
The tour will be conducted in Czech. Meeting point: the city model on Moravian Square.
