guided tour led by Barbora Dočkalová

How many synagogues once stood in Brno, and what remains of them today? This guided walk takes participants to the sites that served as the spiritual heart of Brno's Jewish community for centuries. Beginning at Římské Square, where the medieval synagogue once stood, the tour continues to the site of the former Great Synagogue, burned down by the Nazis in March 1939. It also recalls the former Orthodox Polish Temple, visits Agudas Achim, the only functioning synagogue in Moravia and Czech Silesia today, and concludes at the site of the former New Synagogue on Ponávka Street.

Against the backdrop of surviving and vanished buildings, the walk traces the history of Jewish Brno from the Middle Ages to the present day, showing how its synagogues reflected the development of different religious traditions as well as the changing fortunes of the community itself.

The tour will be conducted in Czech and will last approximately 90 minutes.
