guided tour of Ivančice
Ivančice was for centuries one of the most important centres of Jewish life in Moravia. The local community, whose roots reach deep into the Middle Ages, helped shape the character of the town for more than five hundred years. Today, visitors can still discover one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Moravia, a former synagogue, an extensive Jewish cemetery, and numerous buildings connected with the lives of local families, merchants, industrialists, and rabbis.
This guided walking tour, led by Věra Jelínková, caretaker of the Jewish cemetery and a long-time guardian of the heritage of Ivančice’s Jewish community, will take participants through the former Jewish quarter and introduce the history of the local self-governing Jewish community, the work of prominent rabbis, and the everyday lives of its inhabitants.
The tour will be conducted in Czech.
